When Heske saw in ‘Drawing Your Own Child-part two’ the drawings her father Herwolt van Doornen had made of her as a child she commented “…is ‘drawing your parent’ coming up next? I gotta get in on that.”

Drawing your own Child – Part 2
After my blog on June 15th – Drawing your own child – I was curious, from all the posted comments, if my fellow illustrators had experienced similar problems to me in drawing their own children, so I asked them:
‘Did you draw your own children when they were growing up and were your children an inspiration or daunting because you felt you just couldn’t quite capture them?’

Drawing your own child
My pregnant daughter was being drawn by a colleague at a book presentation this weekend and when she was asked if I’d also made lots of drawings of her she answered, much to my embarrassment… ‘NO!’
I tried to explain to everybody that I had made some sketches of her when she was a child, but I still felt terribly guilty that I hadn’t been more productive when she was little, seizing the opportunity of recording those precious childhood years of my only child.
