{"id":69,"date":"2014-06-15T15:27:51","date_gmt":"2014-06-15T15:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/?p=69"},"modified":"2014-07-23T13:04:48","modified_gmt":"2014-07-23T13:04:48","slug":"drawing-your-own-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/drawing-your-own-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Drawing your own child"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My pregnant daughter was being drawn by a colleague at a book presentation this weekend and when she was asked if I&#8217;d also made lots of drawings of her she answered, much to my embarrassment&#8230; &#8216;NO!&#8217;<br \/>\nI tried to explain to everybody that I had made some sketches of her when she was a child, but I still felt terribly guilty that I hadn&#8217;t been more productive when she was little, seizing the opportunity of recording those precious childhood years of my only child.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And then I got to thinking why? Why did I make so few drawings of my sweet little girl?<\/p>\n<p>My excuse, which seems pretty lame now, was that as a single mother with the sole responsibility of bringing up my child on my own, earning the cost and also working full time as a freelance illustrator, was that I was often just dead tired exhausted most of the time!<\/p>\n<p>But to be honest that wasn&#8217;t the sole reason, for me.<br \/>\nThe most nagging reason, when I really think about it, was the painful awareness of my own frustrating inadequacy of not getting anywhere near to capturing, on paper, the innocent beauty and breathtaking miracle of my own child!<br \/>\nTo me experiencing my beautiful daughter and the whole fantastic adventure of being a mother was with my eyes, with my heart, with my arms, when I hugged her, and with all my senses, day in day out, which no pencil, or pen, or piece of paper-for me-could ever compete with.<\/p>\n<p>When Lisa and I visited my mother in her cottage in England, we shared the flowery spare bedroom together.<br \/>\nOne summer morning in July 1996 I woke up very early and while the birds were singing in my mothers garden, I made little scribbly sketches in my notebook\/diary as Lisa slept.<br \/>\nHere are a couple:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lisa96_01aWEB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lisa96_01aWEB-580x433.jpg\" alt=\"Lisa 4:15am Saturday morning 13-7-96 (note toes sticking out from under the covers!)\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lisa96_01aWEB-580x433.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lisa96_01aWEB.jpg 1038w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lisa 4:15am Saturday morning 13-7-96 (note toes sticking out from under the covers!)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lisa96_01bWEB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindalee.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lisa96_01bWEB-580x244.jpg\" alt=\"Didn't get her hands or toes right so here in more detail..oh gone toes!
